| From the broadcast
the weekend of Oct 4th & 5th, 2008: |
Our Featured Artists on this program were the Dixie Echoes from Pensacola,
Florida, with songs from their current CD called "So Many Reasons."
As I talk with fans and people within the industry, whenever the subject
of classic Southern Gospel quartet singing comes up, the Dixie Echoes are
cited as an example of one of the few groups still doing it regularly. In
fact, as Randy Shelnut mentioned on the program, it's pretty much
all they do. That doesn't mean they sing only old songs. There are plenty
of new ones, too just sung in the classic style. Of course, as Randy
mentioned on the air, for today's younger audiences, even the old stongs
are new because they've never heard them. The Dixie Echoes
today are lead singer Randy Shelnut, his son, baritone Randy Junior
(whose nickname is "Scoot"), bass Pat Barker, tenor Wesley
Smith and pianist Stuart Varnado. More info about the group can
be found at their website.

Congratulations to Bill
and Gloria Gaither for their "Lifetime Achievement Award" from
the Southern Gospel Music Guild. (You heard about this and Bill's response
on the Headline Update.) I cannot think of anyone more worthy of this
recognition. God has certainly blessed this couple in innumerable ways. And
He's certainly used them to place Southern Gospel music before an entire
new generation of fans. Since 1963, they've penned more than 700 songs. They
still live on the 15 acres in Alexandria, Indiana, which they bought for
$3,800 in 1964. In between Bill's 150 Homecoming dates each year and video
shoots around the world and Gloria's ever-increasing demand as an author
and motivational speaker, they still find time to spend with their three
children, Suzanne, Amy and Benjamin, and their six grandchildren.
