| From the broadcast
the weekend of Sept. 20th & 21st, 2008: |
This was our official
Singing News Top 20 Countdown edition, reflecting the chart
as it appears in the magazine's October issue, which is now circulating.
Our countdown edition is usually the last weekend of the month, but was aired
a week early this time so that we can bring you a special program next week.
The Singing News chart reflects airplay of current top songs at radio
stations that play Southern Gospel music and are official reporters to
Singing News magazine.
Our Featured Artists on this broadcast were the Kingsmen, a quartet
that dates back to 1956. Group members have all changed since then, although
bass Ray Reese has been there since the early 1960s. The other vocalists
include Phillip Hughes (lead), Bryan Hutson (baritone)and
Harold Reed (tenor). Songs featured during the Featured Artist visits
on this broadcast were from the current Kingsmen CD entitled "When God
Ran." The Kingsmen aren't the first group to record that song, but, in
Southern Gospel music, it has certainly had an impact. In fact, you heard
Bryan Hutson say the song is the "story of my life" because he can
identify with the prodigal son. "I remember the things of going to church
and...having a relationship with God. But [I thought] 'I've gone so far away
that I can't go back home.' I want to reach those people...who feel like
they can't go home. And they can. God is waiting... And He's wanting us to
come back home." Other Kingsmen songs included on this program were equally
powerful. All in all, this is one of best CDs the Kignsmen have put on in
quite a while, with solid singing and solid "message songs."

Shelia and I had a wonderful week at the National Quartet Convention in
Louisville, KY. (We left town just before the hurricane blew through.)
We conducted almost 80 interviews during the week, so there will be no shortage
of good interviews on The Gospel Greats. Some NQC highlights will
be on our next few programs.
