| From the broadcast
the weekend of Aug. 23rd & 24th, 2008: |
Our Featured Artists on this program were Aaron &
Amanda Crabb with songs from their current "After the Rain" CD.
It has been interesting to watch how individual ministries have grown by
the former members of the Crabb Family, which decided to disband nearly
two years ago. Aaron and Amanda certainly have found their own niche, appearing
all over the country to sing and minister. As I mentioned on the program,
they recently added a new pianist and third-part vocalist, Blaine Johnson
from Alabma. One thing that's kept them busy this summer, in addition
to singing, of course, was moving nto a new home with their kids, Eli and
Eva. Amanda says, "We wanted the children to have a little yard to be
able to run and play in, so God allowed our other house to sell within two
weeks. We have moved into a small community north of Nashville." Amanda
tells me they are starting work on a new recording which is scheduled for
release next spring.

I had several requests to include the late Kenny Hinson
in our series of "Yesterday's Voices" features, and, of course, I
was happy to comply. Kenny was always a joy to interview. My favorite Kenny
Hinson story is one I've told often. We were interviewing years ago (early
80s) in a classroom down the hall from a high school auditorium where the
Hinsons were singing that night. Kenny was still in his street clothes, planning
to change before the Hinsons went on stage. But he really "got into" the
interview, talking about all sorts of things. Then when the interview was
over, we just continued chatting about other stuff. But when we finally opened
the classroom door, Kenny was startled to hear some familiar music coming
from down the hall. The Hinsons were coming on! He ran down
the hall, burst on stage, grabbed a mike, and started to sing as if nothing
had happened. The rest of the group (and the audience) "fell apart!"
I was glad we could visit with the Total Praise
Quartet during this program's Artist Spotlight segment. This group is
Joe Trusty (baritone), Phillip Masters (tenor), Brad Mickler
(lead) and Stephen Jewell (bass). (By the way, you'll hear on
next week's Headline Update that Stephen's wife, Julie, is undergoing
a difficult pregnancy and would appreciate your prayers on their behalf.)
The TPQ recently celebrated the group's tenth anniversary. Actually, a former
member of the quartet (who's still a big supporter of theirs), Rodney
Hicks, started the group with a friend of his with whom he sang in church.
Their CD "Keep On Walking," songs from which were included in this
visit, is their seventh recording. More info about the group is available

Congratulations to Nathaniel Freeman of Texarcana, Arkansas. He's
the winner of a CD and $20 Springside gift certificate in our recent Squire
Parsons trivia question. The question was, "When Squire Parsons left the
Kingsmen back in the late 1970s to do solo singing and evangelistic work,
what prominent quartet invited him to join their group instead?" The
answer was Hovie Lister and the Statesmen. As you heard Squire say
on a previous program, he was sorely tempted to do that. But decided that
the Lord was calling him into a solo ministry which is what he did.
Congratulations, too, to our affiliate KWCL, Oak Grove, Louisiana,
currently celebrating the station's 50th anniversary. As you heard
KWCL's Kelly Lovell say on the air during our "DJ-On-The-Line"
feature, they've been enjoying bringing together a lot of the station's "family"
from over the years to help celebrate.
